This chapter was impressed and motivated by participation within the Quantitative Reasoning session of the Waterbury Summit on Reforming STEM Schooling – The Central Position ofPractices” held in University Park, PA in Summer 2013 The broad targets of the Summit had been to debate the redesign of Okay-12 training for alignment of curriculum-instruction-evaluation; STEM trainer training; post-secondary STEM schooling and informal education on the publics’ engagement. Shows and discussions centered on opportunities and challenges the Next Generation Science Standards current for (1) preliminary preparation of and persevering with skilled improvement of STEM educators and (2) the final schooling of the publics’ understandings about science and engineering practices. Overall, the summit stimulated a reconceptualization of STEM education with a focus on programs thinking, mannequin-based reasoning, and quantitative reasoning.
