The best music to help you concentrate while studying

If you walk into a school library, it’s not uncommon to see 9 out of 10 people studying wearing headphones. Listening to music while reading can be a good way to help concentrate, but what kind of music works best?

1.  Music you like

Before we head off to college, summer school or university, most of us remember to load up our Spotify account with our favourite tunes. The default choice for most students will be to stick on a Spotify playlist of their favourite tunes and hit the books. While this might be the preferred choice, it doesn’t necessarily delivery the best results.

If you’re into lively techno music, the high tempo and changing beat may actually work as a distraction. Similarly for heavy metal, although it’s said to work for some people, it may be more of a distraction than a tool to keep you focused.

2.  Classical

Much of the research carried out in to the best kind of music for studying and concentration points to classical music as the genre of choice. The simple tones and tempo is said to help with focus and it shouldn’t distract too much from the task at hand.

It was once said – and has since been debunked – that listening to a single composer of classical music can have great benefits in concentration and focus. This doesn’t mean to say that if you find a single composer who works for you, you shouldn’t be tempted to create a playlist in Spotify and get going.

3.  Podcasts

It may seem like a difficult task to listen to a podcast of 2 or more people talking and still being able to study, but more many, it actually works. It can be even more of a help if the podcast is related to what you’re studying.

These days it can seem like there’s a podcast for everything. There are many which actually focus on concentration and studying, which may be a good fit if you want to try out a podcast while studying.

4.  Whitenoise

This one sound unusual but some people swear buy it. White noise, often thought of as the sound you hear when your TV loses signal, can actually be any similar consistent noise. Famous football players such as Wayne Rooney have been known to require white noise just to fall asleep at night. The consistent pattern is said to relax the mind and allow it to focus.
